St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey - The Font

The font is dated 1808 according to a plaque on the base of the plinth, but the bowl is of a different material and style, and is clearly from a different period; presumably the original was damaged at some time.  Another oddity is that the bowl is actually oval, not circular.

The font cover is a relatively modern construction, although it might be based on the design of the original.

There are plans to re-order the church and this will hopefully include the restoration of the font to its rightful place inside the west door, on the left, instead of in the north aisle.

We would love to have more information on this, if there are any experts out there!
