St Mary Magdalen Bermondsey - Chandeliers

Back to Photographs Page  Back to Home Page

Two brass chandeliers hang from the transept ceiling, one on either side of the nave.  These magnificent items date respectively from 1699 and 1703, and are used with real candles at the "Carols by Candlelight" Service of 9 Lessons each year (on the Sunday evening before Christmas).

Both were the gift of the Ellwood family, and one has the name "Winefrid Ellwood" instead of the correct "Winifred Ellwood".
