The Trompe-d'Oeil in Bermondsey St

The side of the rectory garage in Bermondsey Street, beside the church, is an interesting trompe d'oeil:

Honestly, this is a flat wall! It was done in the 1990s following the design of the listed Watch-house at the corner of Bermondsey Street and Long Lane.  There was a second Watch-house of this design on this site as evidenced by an etching in the church, but it was demolished in about the 1960s, possibly when the new Rectory was built.

The tree is a new innovation, thanks to Southwark Council.  Historically there is no evidence of trees growing beside the road at any time in the past
